HOMELESS FAMILIES ARE COUNTING ON THE MEDIA

Program: Home Before, or Just  After  Christmas

The calls are flowing in, 6 calls this morning, from Portland to Island Falls, 3 housing opportunities and 3 parties in need. Hospitality House Inc., announced in the Bangor Daily News its Low tech program.  We are on the search of unrented space. A great grandmother called about her 21 year old who was homeless for two years.  Her and her child needs a one bedroom in the Brewer/Bangor area. Can you imagine couch surfing for two years.  We are hopeful of Christmas, Hanukah and all the other holidays’ miracles happening between now and Jan 31st.
Housed people not owning apartments can help with rent deposits if they are so moved. We just hookup people without apt’s with landlords.  We are hoping that  those who want to aid those who are underpaid, or due to health reasons are not working will be generous.
Home before Christmas is designed to insure no family is homeless over the holidays.  The 25 year old Hospitality House Inc., will add a new service to it’s statewide, toll – free Homeless Crisis Hotline service.   It will run until Jan 31.   Land lords are invited to call in to the hotline with empty rooms and apartments.
9A -3P if possible, or leave a message. Currently the hotline has an from the store male voice saying leave your number
With the numbers of homeless up, where as almost every homeless and battered shelter turns away a few in need, or has a waiting list, the hotline is asking anyone with space or a room to call 1-800-438-3890.
We are hoping to match up homeless individuals, and families-with available rents across Maine.  We even serve into New Hampshire.  So far have a 5 month pregnant mother to be, in Bangor area, and a home 2 bedroom home in Newport area.  Which could possibly work out, or not that is only 3 hours into this project.
This is a home without the article would have just waited empty to be sold in a downsized market.  But a homeless person could have a home for a month or months, and the owner some income.  It’s a win-Win program.  WE are waiting for calls.
Even if we hook-up only one family in the entire state, with an apartment,  that is better then NO Individuals, or families.  Our aim is to aid 10 callers with relocation apartments.
This is the first time Hospitality House Inc. has reached out to the public for empty apartments.  It prays that media will cover this issue so that many families can be aided.
The hotline is in a unique position, where it can match the vacancies with callers from around the two states. The Hotline will take the contact information and location and specifics about the apartments. Then we will have a list of families in need. A few of these families might be willing to relocate to a neighboring town, Or across the state.
We seek news to announce this new program so we can match empty apartments with families looking for apartments.
People with apts., are asked if possible to call between 9AM until 3 PM. If they must call after that, please leave a message on the machine. Please talk slowing, tell me what city the apt. is in, and give your name and phone number twice.
If I am near the phone, and hear you are calling with an empty apartment, I will pick up. The more apartments which are listed the better the chances of filling them, before Dec. 24th;  On into the New Year.
Make project Home for the holidays a success.  No cost, just be willing to work with the homeless.  Call and list your vacate apartments.
News Outlets the success or failure of this program is in your hands we must have coverage, in order to house even 10 families.
As always, our non-profit will gladly accept donations to pay for needs of the underpaid.
